In Pursuit of Obedience

Devotional Reading: “But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, “Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert road.)” Act 8:26 NAS

In the eighth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, we find the story of Philip the Evangelist. He was also the Philip who had earlier been selected into the deaconry, alongside Stephen and five other brothers.

As persecution broke out against the church, Philip went into Samaria with the gospel, and the LORD prospered his ministry. The people received his message with joy, and paid attention. Miracles abounded with “uncontainable joy filling the city!” (vs 8 TPT).

In simple terms, the whole city accepted him. There was divine validation, and human acceptance, what more could the man of God seek?

But God sought more. For in verse 26, we were told that an angel of the LORD brought a message to Philip. He was to leave Samaria, and go to the desert area. The man of God was required to leave everything behind, and travel to the desert.

Philip knew that when God makes a demand, convenience should not be a barrier to obedience. And that is what God calls us to, this morning. Often times, knowing what God demands from us is not the issue, but finding the courage to do it.

When those moments come, may The LORD grant you the courage to choose obedience. Amen.

Father, having known what You demand of me, I receive the courage to do it in Jesus name, Amen.
