The One Thing that Changes Everything
Devotional Reading: “But one thing is needful…” Luke 10:42 KJV
When Jesus responded to Martha, He did not attack her cooking or her commitment. He went straight to the core: “One thing is needful.” In other words, Martha was doing many good things but avoiding the one necessary thing. Many believers are like that. We love God, we pray, we serve, we try our best, but sometimes we miss the simplest truth.
God wants fellowship before productivity. He wants presence before performance. He wants heart before hands. Martha thought Jesus needed more plates. Jesus knew Martha needed more peace.
When the heart focuses on the one needful thing, everything else finds order. Sometimes the reason things feel scattered in our lives is because our attention is on everything except the main thing.
Devotion is not laziness. Sitting with Jesus is not wasting time. It is alignment. It is where wisdom is given, strength is refreshed and priorities are rearranged. Martha needed to pause long enough to receive what would make her work easier. Many of us need the same correction. Jesus was not asking her to stop serving forever. He was asking her to stop serving empty. When the heart is full of His presence, service becomes joy instead of burden.
Prayers and Confession
Lord, help me to choose the one needful thing daily. I receive the grace to prioritize fellowship above activity. I confess that my life is ordered, my mind is calm and my steps are guided as I sit at Your feet. Amen!
