Forgiveness Is How You Refuse to Stay Offended

Key Text: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness is one of those things everybody likes to preach about until somebody actually gives you a reason to use it. It is easy to say, “Forgive people,” until the person who hurt you is someone you trusted deeply. But forgiveness is not pretending that the pain did not happen; it is choosing that the pain will not become the boss of your heart. You may not control what happened to you, but you can decide what you will carry from it.

Jesus gave us the clearest picture of this on the cross. While people were actively hurting Him, He prayed for their forgiveness rather than allowing their actions to produce hatred in Him. That is not natural human behaviour; it is the power of grace at work. Sometimes forgiveness feels impossible because we are waiting to feel forgiving before we forgive. But forgiveness is often a decision before it becomes a feeling.

There is also something liberating about realizing that forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation. You can forgive someone without immediately trusting them again, and you can release bitterness without giving someone unrestricted access to your life. Forgiveness frees your heart; wisdom determines your boundaries. You do not have to keep drinking poison because somebody else handed you the bottle. Let God deal with the offender while you allow Him to heal your heart.

Prayer and Confession
Lord, give me grace to forgive those who have hurt, disappointed, misunderstood, or offended me. Help me release resentment and stop replaying painful moments in my mind. Give me wisdom to forgive while maintaining healthy boundaries where necessary. Amen.

Reflection
Who am I still carrying in my heart because I have not truly forgiven them? Am I confusing forgiveness with pretending that nothing happened? What would I gain if I finally released this offence to God?
