NOT EVERY VOICE DESERVES YOUR ATTENTION

One of the reasons people struggle with right decisions is that there are simply too many voices competing for attention. Your friends have an opinion, your family has an opinion, social media has an opinion, your emotions have an opinion, and somehow that one person who has never paid your bills also has a strong opinion about your life. The problem is not that people have opinions. The problem is when everybody’s voice becomes louder than God’s voice. Discernment requires learning to recognise which voice deserves the final word.
Consider Samuel in 1 Samuel 3. When God called him, Samuel initially thought Eli was calling him. He heard a genuine voice but misunderstood its source. That is powerful because sometimes the issue is not that we cannot hear, but that we have not learned how to interpret what we are hearing. Samuel needed spiritual instruction before he could properly recognise God’s voice. In the same way, maturity is not simply knowing that something is happening around you; it is developing the spiritual sensitivity to understand what God is saying about what is happening.
This is why you should not make major decisions immediately after an emotional experience. Do not resign from your job because you had one frustrating Monday. Do not marry someone simply because you had one beautiful weekend together. Do not reject an opportunity because one person discouraged you. Do not accept an opportunity because everyone is shouting, “This is your season!” Pause. Pray. Search the Scriptures. Examine the facts. Seek wise counsel. Then decide. Sometimes God does not give you a louder voice; He gives you a quieter heart. When your emotions settle, you may discover that what looked urgent was never actually urgent.
Prayer and Confession
Father, quiet every voice that is competing with Your wisdom in my life. Help me to distinguish Your voice from my emotions, fears, assumptions, pressure, and the opinions of people. Give me spiritual sensitivity to recognise what You are saying and courage to obey You even when Your direction differs from popular opinion. I receive grace to slow down before making important decisions. Amen.
