Beware of Covetousness
Luke 12:15 KJV
And he said to them, take heed. and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance the things which he possesseth.
We ought to stay with God’s will and desire for our lives especially in our attitude to money and material things. Jesus in the opening text above shows us that a believer ought not to be covetous. Do not yield to the culture of the world; it is a culture that promotes an insatiable desire for amassing material wealth. Such desires are not to be found with us.
God’s desire for us is to be content. Contentment is not the same as mediocrity, rather it means you do not have within you an uncontrollable or an insatiable desire for material possessions. God wants you to be content because, in the kingdom of God, your wealth is not measured by how much things you have amassed but by your generosity.
Wealth in God’s kingdom is measured by generosity. This is the example we see in the early church in the book of Acts. The scriptures stated that “And the multitude of them that were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.” (Acts 4:32). Those that had material possessions were generous with it by selling it and giving the money for meeting the needs of saints in the church. This was possible because they were not covetous, A covetous man is a greedy man and is never generous
Being content will save you from the troubles and sorrows of this life. Apostle Paul admonishes us concerning this, in his writing to Timothy, he said, “For the love of money is the root of all evil which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
