GRACES AND PLACES 3
Key Text: “And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. And he arose and went…” Acts 8:26–27 (KJV)
Sometimes, the issue is not that we lack grace, but that we have not recognised where that grace is supposed to find expression. We can carry something valuable and still struggle to make an impact if we keep trying to express it in the wrong environment. For instance a talented teacher who has the ability to simplify difficult subjects but never finds an opportunity to teach; the ability is there, but the right context for its expression is missing.
In Acts 8, Philip was experiencing a powerful move of God in Samaria when the Holy Spirit directed him to leave and go towards Gaza. Interestingly, he was sent to a desert road, not another crowded gathering, and there he encountered an Ethiopian official who needed someone to explain the Scriptures to him. Philip’s obedience connected his grace for evangelism and teaching with a person who needed exactly what he carried. What looked like a strange change of location became a divine appointment.
This teaches us to pay attention to divine instructions, relationships, opportunities, and environments. Sometimes, God may be leading you into a new community, workplace, ministry, or relationship where the grace upon your life can serve a greater purpose. Don’t become so attached to a familiar place that you miss the opportunity to function in a new one. The fact that your grace is working in one place does not mean God cannot lead you somewhere else for a greater expression of that same grace.
Prayers and Confession
Father, help me recognise the places and opportunities where the grace upon my life is needed. Give me sensitivity to recognise and obey Your leading, even when it takes me beyond familiar environments. Amen.
Reflection
Am I so comfortable with where I currently function that I might be overlooking other places where God wants to express His grace through me?
