Discerning Truth
Devotional Reading: Hebrews 5:14 TPT
But solid food is for the mature, whose spiritual senses perceive heavenly matters. And they have been adequately trained by what they’ve experienced to emerge with understanding of the difference between what is truly excellent and what is evil and harmful.
As believers, we are constantly bombarded with information and ideas that can either edify or deceive us. Just like most staffs are trained to be vigilant to detect counterfeit currency, we must be discerning to detect spiritual counterfeits.
Imagine a friend approaches you with an investment opportunity that promises unusually high returns with little risk. It sounds too good to be true, but they assure you it’s legitimate. Before investing, you must discern whether this opportunity aligns with biblical principles of stewardship and integrity. Remember the wisdom of Proverbs 13:11, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”
In our walk with God, discernment is crucial to avoid being led astray. Consider the story of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan deceived her by twisting God’s Word, and she believed the lie. We must learn to test every teaching, idea, or opportunity against God’s Word. If it doesn’t align with scripture, we must reject it.
Practically, discerning truths involves seeking God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from trusted individuals. It also requires humility, recognizing that we can be deceived. Let us ask God to give us discerning hearts and minds, that we may detect deception and walk in His truth.
Prayer and Confession
Dear God, help me to discern truth from deception. Give me a heart that desires Your truth above all else and the wisdom to test every thing against Your Word.
