Being an Example to Others

Devotional Reading: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

As believers, we are called to be examples of Christ to the world. Our lives should reflect His love, grace, and truth in everything we do. Jesus referred to His followers as the light of the world and the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13-14). This means that our words, actions, and attitudes should bring light into darkness and preserve the truth in a world that is drifting away from God. People should be able to look at us and see a difference—one that points them to Jesus.

Being an example does not mean living a perfect life but living a life that consistently seeks to honor God. When we make mistakes, we should be quick to repent and make things right. True influence does not come from portraying an image of perfection but from demonstrating humility, faith, and a genuine love for God and people. The Apostle Paul encouraged believers to imitate him as he imitated Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). We, too, should live in such a way that others can follow our example and grow closer to Jesus.

Our example should not only be evident in the church but also in our daily interactions—at work, in our families, and among friends. How we treat others, how we handle difficult situations, and how we respond to trials all testify to the depth of our faith. If we claim to be followers of Christ but our actions contradict His teachings, we may cause others to stumble. Instead, we must strive to live with integrity, kindness, and a spirit of excellence so that others are drawn to the truth of the gospel.

Living as an example also requires boldness. In a world where values are constantly shifting, standing firm in Christ can be challenging. However, we are not called to blend in but to stand out. The more we reflect Christ in our character, the more people will see the difference He makes in our lives. When we remain faithful, consistent, and unwavering in our faith, others will be encouraged to seek the God we serve.

Prayer and Confession
I am a light in this world. My life is an example of Christ’s love, faithfulness, and holiness. Others see Jesus in me, and my actions lead them closer to God. Amen
