Waiting Requires Focus

Devotional Reading: looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 NKJV

Waiting on God is not just about sitting still; it is about keeping your focus in the right direction. When answers seem delayed, it is very easy to start looking around at what others are doing and comparing your journey with theirs. But comparison during waiting is like checking your neighbor’s cooking pot when your own food is still on the fire…it only makes you hungrier and more impatient.

Focus in waiting means fixing your eyes on the One who promised, not on the clock ticking on the wall. If you spend all your energy counting the days, months, or years, the waiting will feel like a lifetime. But when your eyes are on Christ, faith grows stronger, and your heart remains stable, even when nothing seems to be moving.

Distraction in waiting often leads to compromise. Abraham and Sarah lost focus and tried their own plan with Hagar. The result was not the fulfillment of promise but a complication that echoed for generations. When you lose focus, you may grab hold of something that looks like a blessing but ends up as a burden.

That is why the writer of Hebrews says, “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” Focus guards you against frustration, comparison, and shortcuts. While you wait, choose to keep your gaze steady on the One who never fails.

Prayer and Confession
Lord, I fix my eyes on You. I will not be distracted by what others are doing or by the passing of time. My focus is on Your promise and not on my impatience. Amen!
