Rule Your Passion

Passion is defined as an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. It can also be used to describe a strong and barely controllable emotion. We must understand that passion is not evil in itself, because we need to be passionate and disciplined about our walk with God. However, because passion has to do with emotion, we must watch it. When a right passion is not controlled, it can wreak havoc.

For instance, anger is not a sin. However, when not properly managed, it leads to sin. Cain was given to anger, so was Reuben and Levi. We must not forget that anger is positive when channelled in the right way. For instance, it is right to get angry at ungodly practices. However, when not mastered, such anger can lead to sin.

Samson is another example of an individual with untamed passion. Though anointed and powerful, he could not rule over his sexual desires. While sexual intimacy is a provision of God for married couples, when not mastered, it leads to sin. Joseph is an example of a man who mastered his sexual passion. Although he was pestered by Potiphar’s wife, he held his ground. According to Joseph, that was great wickedness and sin against God (Genesis 39:9).

Beloved, while we have established that passions are God-given, but could lead to sin if not mastered. Another way to say it is that when strengths are brought under control, they could become weaknesses. What strength do you need God to help you master?

Prayer and Confession
Father, I refuse to yield my passions to the devil. I declare that I am controlled by the Holy Spirit.
