LOOK BEYOND THE NOW

Key Text: “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3 KJV

One of the clearest differences between wisdom and foolishness is the ability to think beyond the present moment. Foolishness asks, “What do I feel like doing now?” Wisdom asks, “Where will this decision take me?” Something can make you happy today and create problems tomorrow. That new phone may be affordable until the repayment starts, that relationship may feel exciting until your values begin fighting each other, and that seemingly harmless habit may become a chain when repeated long enough. Wisdom does not only inspect the pleasure of a decision; it considers its price.

Esau is a painful example of this. He was hungry, Jacob had food, and Esau traded his birthright for a meal. There was nothing wrong with eating. The problem was allowing a temporary appetite to determine the value of something far more important. In that moment, the birthright probably felt abstract while the food felt very real. That is how many bad decisions happen: the immediate becomes louder than the important. We sacrifice tomorrow’s value because today’s desire is making noise.

Before making an important decision, learn to ask yourself a few uncomfortable questions: What happens if this continues for five years? What kind of person will this decision make me? What will it cost my peace, relationships, finances, spiritual life, or assignment? If someone I love made this exact decision, what would I advise them? These questions slow down impulsiveness and expose consequences. You do not need to become afraid of every decision; you simply need to stop treating tomorrow like it does not exist. A wise person enjoys today without borrowing trouble from tomorrow.

Prayer and Confession
Father, give me the wisdom to see beyond immediate pleasure, pressure, and convenience. Help me to consider the consequences of my decisions and to value what matters eternally. I declare that I have foresight and wisdom. I will not sacrifice my future on the altar of temporary desire. I think beyond today, I choose wisely, and my decisions produce good fruit in my life. Amen.

Reflection
What decision are you considering right now, and what could its consequences look like five years from today?
