THE BATTLE OF THE GODS 8

Key Text: “And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.” 1 Kings 18:33–34 (KJV)

One of the most surprising moments in Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal was his decision to pour water on the sacrifice. The altar needed fire, yet Elijah deliberately made everything wet, not once but three times. Humanly speaking, he was making an already difficult situation more difficult, but he understood something important: what looks impossible to man is not necessarily impossible for God. Sometimes, obedience will not make sense to everyone around you because they are judging the instruction by what they can see, while God sees the bigger picture.

However, this story is not an invitation to do strange things simply because they look spiritual. Elijah was not acting out of excitement or trying to impress the crowd; he was operating within the specific purpose of God in that moment. In our lives, obedience may mean telling the truth when a lie would be more convenient, remaining faithful when compromise offers quick benefits, or following God’s Word when popular opinion says otherwise. You do not prove your faith by making life unnecessarily difficult; you prove it by obeying God even when obedience is inconvenient.

The water did not weaken God’s power; it made the source of the miracle impossible to mistake. When the fire fell, nobody could reasonably claim that Elijah had secretly arranged the sacrifice to catch fire. In the same way, there are moments when your circumstances may appear to work against what God has asked you to do, but difficulty alone does not mean you have missed God. Still, do not confuse every obstacle with a divine test or every personal idea with God’s instruction; let Scripture guide your convictions and give you the wisdom to distinguish faith from presumption.

Prayers and Confession
Father, give me a heart that obeys Your Word even when I do not fully understand the outcome. Deliver me from the pressure to compromise simply because obedience seems difficult. Help me to trust Your wisdom without becoming careless or presumptuous. My confidence is in Your power, not in how easy or difficult my circumstances appear, in Jesus’ Name.

Reflection
Is there an instruction from God’s Word that I have avoided because it seems inconvenient?
