The Law of Focus 1

Key Text:“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

Focus is the ability to direct your attention towards what matters and keep it there long enough to make meaningful progress. Think about someone who wants to read the Bible every morning but checks WhatsApp first, opens Instagram to see one post, watches three videos, replies to five messages, and suddenly discovers that it is time to bathe and rush out. The intention was spiritual growth, but the attention went on a little vacation! This is why good intentions alone do not produce good results; what consistently receives your attention influences what your life eventually produces.

In Hebrews 12:2, the writer tells us to look unto Jesus. This is more than a religious instruction to think about Jesus occasionally; it calls us to make Him our reference point as we live, grow, endure difficulties, and pursue God’s purpose. Peter walked on water while his attention was fixed on Jesus, but began to sink when he became overwhelmed by the wind and waves (Matthew 14:28–31). Notice that the wind did not suddenly appear when Peter started sinking; the circumstances became more powerful in his attention than the One who had called him.

Your focus influences your decisions, and your decisions gradually shape your direction. A student who focuses on learning will likely develop skills that a student who spends every evening comparing their life with influencers will miss. A young entrepreneur who studies customers, improves a product, and manages money wisely is doing more than wishing for success; they are directing their attention towards the things that make success possible. You cannot give every voice equal attention and expect every area of your life to receive meaningful progress. Focus requires you to recognise what deserves your attention and what merely wants to borrow it.

Prayers and Confession
Lord, help me to direct my attention towards You and the responsibilities You have placed before me. Deliver me from distractions that consume my time without contributing to my growth. I confess that my attention will be guided by truth, wisdom, and purpose, and my daily choices will reflect what truly matters. Amen.

Reflection
What has been receiving most of your attention lately, and is it taking you in the direction you genuinely want to go?
