The War You Did Not Sign Up For (But Are Already In)

Devotional Reading: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”* – Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Whether you realize it or not, the moment you became a believer, you were enlisted in a war. You didn’t sign a form, choose a uniform, or tick a box marked “Yes, I want to fight demons.” The day you said “Yes” to Jesus, you said “No” to the devil, and that automatically made you a target. This war isn’t fought with bombs and guns — it is fought with truth, prayer, faith, and obedience. Many Christians think Christianity is just about avoiding sin and waiting for heaven, but Scripture tells us it’s about standing firm in a battle that is already raging.

The shocking part is that many Christians are walking around like untrained soldiers on a battlefield, unaware of the bullets flying over their heads. Imagine being in a war zone with headphones on, dancing to your favorite playlist. That’s how some believers live — spiritually distracted while the enemy is busy planting landmines in their relationships, finances, health, and mental space. The Apostle Paul wasn’t exaggerating when he said our struggle isn’t against people. If it were just about people, we could negotiate peace treaties. But this war is against unseen forces that cannot be appeased — only resisted.

Spiritual warfare isn’t always dramatic. The enemy rarely knocks on your door dressed in red with a pitchfork; he prefers whispering half-truths, stirring up offense, or distracting you when you should be praying. His favorite battlefield is the mind — because if you lose there, you’ll soon lose everywhere else. In life, even a skilled football team will keep losing if they forget to defend. In the same way, ignoring this reality gives the enemy free goals in your life.

Here’s the good news, you are not fighting to win — you are fighting from victory. Jesus already defeated the enemy; your job is to enforce that victory daily. That means staying spiritually alert, using your God-given weapons, and refusing to live like a civilian when you’ve been called to be a soldier. The war is real, but so is your authority in Christ — and the enemy knows it.

Prayer and Confession
Lord, open my eyes to the battles around me. Help me live alert, armed, and aware of my authority in Christ. Teach me to stand firm in victory every day. Amen!
