Sunflower

Luke 8:15 AMP

But as for that seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word with a good and noble heart, and hold on to it tightly, and bear fruit with patience.

Sunflowers sprout in a carefree manner all over the world. Pollinated by bees, the plants spring up on the sides of highways, under bird feeders, and across fields, meadows, and prairies. To produce a harvest, however, sunflowers need good soil. Well-drained, slightly acidic, nutrient-rich soil “with organic matter or composted,” says the Farmer’s Almanac, finally produces tasty sunflower seeds, pure oil, and also a livelihood for hard-working sunflower growers.

Just as the sunflowers, the word of God which Jesus illustrated as a seed can fall into any ground – the rocky ground, along the way side, among thorns. However, as Jesus has stated in our text, for the seed (God’s word) to grow effectively and produce good fruits or desired results, it needs a good soil which is a heart that receives the Word with Joy and also retain the Word in the heart for it to take effect.

James explained that one of the way to receive the word is to receive it in humility “…Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.” (James 1:21). Just as the sunflower turns it’s face towards the east to warm the face of the flower, in order to produce a greater harvest, believers must turn it’s heart towards the Word of God daily in order to produce desirable fruit and to be built up in the knowledge of Christ.

Commit yourself to studying and listening to the word of God with a open heart better than the previous years.
