The Power of Discernment in Wisdom

Devotional Reading: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5 (KJV)

One key aspect of wisdom is discernment—the ability to differentiate between what is right and wrong, good and best. The opening text shows us that God’s wisdom isn’t limited or scarce; He freely gives it to those who seek it earnestly. Discernment is vital for navigating life’s complexities, helping us make wise choices and avoid pitfalls.

When faced with choices, discerning God’s will can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, the Holy Spirit is always available to guide us. Picture yourself standing at a crossroads with multiple paths in front of you. Without discernment, all paths may seem appealing, but only one will lead you to God’s intended purpose. The more we seek God, the sharper our spiritual discernment becomes. This allows us to see beyond the surface and identify the most beneficial course of action.

One way to develop discernment is through prayer and consistent fellowship with the Word of God. When decisions arise, ask for His insight. This doesn’t mean you’ll always receive a direct, audible answer, but with time and practice, you’ll begin to sense His leading more clearly. Like a GPS system that recalibrates when we take a wrong turn, God’s wisdom will redirect us toward the right path.

For example, it is like someone who is offered a job promotion on the surface, the promotion looks like a great opportunity with financial gain and prestige. But, with discernment, the person may realize that the position would take them away from their family, and it could strain their spiritual health.

Wisdom isn’t always about choosing what seems best in the moment but understanding what truly aligns with God’s greater plan.
