Salvation 101: Saved By a Look
Key Text: “And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that everyone that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.” Numbers 21:8-9 KJV
This story almost feels strange when you first read it. The people sinned, snakes appeared, and instead of God removing the snakes, He asked Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up. One would expect God to say, “Repent deeply, cry loudly, promise never to complain again.” But He did not. He said, “Look.” No payment plan. No spiritual gymnastics. Just look and live. That is salvation in its simplest and most uncomfortable form for human pride.
Now here is the unusual and beautiful part. God used the very image of what was killing them as the instrument of healing. The serpent that represented judgment became the means of mercy. This was not accidental. Jesus later explained that this was a picture of Himself being lifted up on the cross. Sin was judged in Him so life could flow to us. Grace does not deny the seriousness of sin. It confronts it directly and then provides a way out that does not depend on human strength.
Let us be honest. Looking feels too easy. We prefer something we can do. We want effort because effort makes us feel useful. But the man dying from snake venom did not need determination. He needed direction. He did not need to understand how bronze heals. He just needed to look. Many believers are still trying to fight venom with effort when God says life comes by faith.
Prayers and Confession
Father, thank You that salvation is received by faith and not earned by effort. I confess that I look to Christ alone for life, healing, and righteousness. I choose faith over struggle and trust over self effort. Amen.
