WHEN YOUR NEEDS BECOME YOUR TREASURE
Key Text: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
There is nothing wrong with having needs. You need food, money, shelter, relationships, opportunities, good health, direction, and many other things. The problem begins when the things you need become the things you live for. Sometimes we can become so focused on what we want God to give us that we gradually lose sight of the God who gives it. We came to prayer saying, “Lord, I want You,” but after fifteen minutes we have presented God with a complete shopping list, including items we did not even remember we needed before we started praying.
This is one of the subtle conditions of the heart. Our hearts can become directed toward God’s hands instead of God’s heart. We can love the blessing more than the Blesser, pursue the promise more than the One who made the promise, and become more excited about what God can do for us than about who God is. Jesus did not say that our Father does not know our needs; He actually said that our heavenly Father knows that we need these things. The invitation is therefore to seek God first, trusting that our needs are safe in the hands of the One who knows them.
A healthy heart does not stop asking God for things; it simply refuses to make those things the foundation of its relationship with Him. You can desire marriage and still treasure God more than marriage. You can desire financial increase and still treasure God more than money. You can pray for an opportunity without allowing the opportunity to become your identity. The real heart check is this: If God answered your prayer exactly as you wanted, would you become more devoted to Him or would you simply move on to the next request? Sometimes the greatest miracle God wants to work is not changing what is around us, but correcting what has happened inside us.
Prayer and Confession
Father, forgive me for the times my needs have become more important to me than knowing You. Help me to desire Your presence more than Your presents and Your will more than my own plans. Teach me to trust You with my unanswered prayers, delayed expectations, and deepest desires. I choose to seek You first, knowing that You are a good Father who knows what I need. My heart belongs to You, not merely to what You can give me. Amen.
Reflection
When you pray, do you spend more time asking God for things or knowing God Himself? Is there a particular need that has become so important that it is affecting your peace? If God delayed answering that prayer, would you still love and serve Him wholeheartedly?
