LESSONS FROM ELISHA: STAY CLOSE ENOUGH TO LEARN

Key Text: “And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee.” 2 Kings 2:9

Elisha had already answered the call, but he did not stop there. He stayed with Elijah through the journey from Gilgal to Bethel, from Bethel to Jericho, and from Jericho to Jordan. At every point, Elijah told him to stay behind, but Elisha kept saying, in essence, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” There was something Elisha understood: proximity creates opportunities for learning that observation from a distance cannot provide.

Sometimes we want the results of people we admire without wanting the process that produced those results. We see someone’s preaching, business, marriage, leadership, ministry, career or influence and think, “I want that.” But we may not be willing to stay close enough to see the sacrifices, discipline, failures, prayers and ordinary routines behind it. Elisha did not only want Elijah’s mantle; he was willing to follow Elijah’s footsteps. If you want to learn from someone, do not only admire their platform. Pay attention to their process.

There is also a lesson here about consistency. Elisha’s breakthrough moment did not happen because he suddenly appeared at the Jordan. He had been following for a while. He kept showing up when nothing spectacular was happening. That is where many people struggle. We love the moment when the oil flows, but not the days when nothing seems to be happening. We want the certificate without the classes, the harvest without the planting, and sometimes the anointing without the training. Elisha teaches us that sometimes the miracle is waiting on the other side of your consistency.

Prayers and Confession
Lord, give me the grace to remain committed to the process of learning and growing. Help me not to despise seasons where I am being trained, corrected and prepared. Give me wisdom to recognize the people and opportunities You have placed around me, and help me to learn with humility. I will not abandon my process because it looks ordinary. I will remain teachable, consistent and faithful. I will learn, grow and become all that God has called me to be. Amen.
