LESSONS FROM ELISHA 1
Elisha was not sitting under a tree waiting for Elijah to announce his arrival. He was working. He was plowing the field when Elijah came looking for him. This teaches us something important: God can find you faithfully doing what is in your hands before He gives you what is next. Sometimes we are so busy looking for the next big thing that we neglect the small thing currently in front of us. But Elisha’s ordinary work became the location of an extraordinary calling.
Notice also that Elisha had something going for him before the prophetic call came. He was already engaged in productive work, and Scripture presents him as someone working with twelve yoke of oxen. His background was not the point, but his response was. When Elijah threw his mantle over him, Elisha understood that an invitation had come that could change the direction of his life. A divine opportunity often requires a decisive response. You cannot keep one foot in yesterday and expect to fully walk into tomorrow.
Elisha teaches us that responding to God’s call may involve leaving something familiar. He kissed his parents goodbye, prepared a meal from the oxen and followed Elijah. That sounds dramatic until you realize that every meaningful transition in life requires you to release something. It could be an old mindset, an unhealthy relationship, an unnecessary habit, a comfort zone, or even the fear of starting small. Sometimes the greatest thing standing between you and your next season is not Satan, the economy, or your village people; sometimes it is simply your unwillingness to let go of what God has asked you to leave.
Prayers and Confession
Lord, give me grace to recognize the opportunities and assignments You place before me. Help me to remain faithful with what is in my hands while preparing for what You are taking me into. I receive courage to leave behind whatever You have instructed me to release, and I choose to follow Your leading wholeheartedly. Amen.
