The Law of Focus 2
Key Text:“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”James 1:8 (KJV)
One of the enemies of focus is not always laziness; sometimes, it is the desire to do too many things at the same time. You want to grow spiritually, build a career, start a business, learn a skill, improve your finances, maintain every friendship, and still have enough time to scroll through social media for three hours. Before you know it, you are busy every day but cannot point to meaningful progress in any particular area. Being occupied is not the same as being productive. Even a person running around inside a market can sweat all day without buying the item they came for!
James 1:8 describes a double minded person as unstable in all their ways. In context, James is addressing the person who struggles to trust God consistently while asking Him for wisdom. The principle extends into everyday life: when your attention and commitment keep shifting between competing priorities, your actions become inconsistent.
Consider Nehemiah, who was rebuilding Jerusalem’s broken wall when his enemies tried to distract him from the work. His response was clear: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3, KJV). He understood that not every invitation deserved his attention, even when it appeared important or came from people who wanted to meet with him. This is a lesson for your own life: some opportunities must wait, some conversations must end, and some good ideas must remain ideas for now because you cannot pursue everything at once. Focus does not mean that you have only one responsibility; it means you know which responsibility deserves your attention at a particular time.
Prayers and Confession
Father, grant me wisdom to recognise what deserves my attention in this season of my life. Help me to overcome the urge to pursue everything at once, and teach me to remain consistent in the things that matter. I declare that I will not waste my days in endless activity without meaningful progress; by Your grace, I will give myself wholeheartedly to the work You have placed before me. Amen.
Reflection
What are the three things currently competing for your attention, and which one deserves your strongest commitment in this season?
