THE LAW OF FOCUS 3

Key Text:“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”Proverbs 4:25 (KJV)

Your eyes are more than organs for seeing; they are gateways through which information, desires, ideas, and comparisons enter your mind. What you repeatedly look at can influence what you desire, what you believe is possible, and what you eventually pursue. This is why spending hours watching people display their achievements online can make you feel unsuccessful, even when you are making genuine progress in your own life. You went online to relax, but somehow returned feeling that everybody your age has bought a house, travelled abroad, started a company, and received an award for excellence!

Proverbs 4:25 instructs us to keep our eyes looking straight ahead. The surrounding verses speak about guarding the heart, watching our steps, and refusing to turn towards crooked paths. The lesson is that direction requires discipline over what receives our attention. In Genesis 13:10–11, Lot lifted his eyes and saw the well watered plain of the Jordan, which appeared attractive to him, and he chose that region. His choice illustrates an important principle: what looks attractive is not automatically what is wise, because appearance can highlight immediate benefits while hiding future consequences.

Jesus also taught that the eye is the lamp of the body (Matthew 6:22–23). In context, He was teaching about vision, spiritual perception, and the danger of serving money rather than God. What we continually set before ourselves can influence the way we interpret life and the things we value most. If you keep feeding your mind with envy, you may begin to despise your own journey; if you consistently expose yourself to wisdom, Scripture, sound teaching, and examples of disciplined living, you give your mind better material for making decisions. You cannot control everything that enters your field of vision, but you can decide what deserves a permanent seat in your attention.

Prayers and Confession
Father, help me to guard my eyes and direct my attention towards what builds my life and strengthens my walk with You. Deliver me from unhealthy comparison, destructive desires, and the temptation to pursue things simply because they look attractive. I declare that my vision will be guided by Your Word, my choices will reflect wisdom, and I will not abandon my purpose because somebody else’s life looks more exciting. Amen.

Reflection
What are you repeatedly looking at that is influencing your desires, your decisions, or your perception of your own progress?
