Eternal Life

1 John 5:13 KJV

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Some define eternal life as living forever. But that’s not it. Everyone lives forever both believers and unbelievers alike either in heaven or hell. We must understand that when the scriptures speaks of we having eternal life, it speaks of a present tense possession, it is a now possession and continues on and on even at the point of glorification. When we speak of eternal life we are speaking of the quality of the life and not the duration of it.

Many have thought and taught that the goal of salvation is that men receive the forgiveness of sins in other to avoid hell. But our anchor text paints a different picture for us again it says “I’ve written this letter to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you will be assured and know without a doubt that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 TPT. Sure not perishing in hell is an important part of what Jesus did and he accomplished that paying our debts of our sins past present and future.

But much more, salvation is more than getting our sins forgiven so we can go to heaven. It is having eternal life, the very life of God himself. We are not just folks who have had our sins forgiven we are also folks who have the life which is the nature of God. We have an endless life, a life full of health, full of the Spirit, a life of miracles, abundance and endless possibilities. Hallelujah!
