Alone with God

Devotional Reading: “But when you pray, go away by yourself, all alone, and shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father, who knows your secrets, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 TLB

The doctrine of prayer is one that isn’t strange to the believer. It is assumed that every single believer knows that prayer is important and necessary for the Christian journey. In fact, it isn’t only in Christianity that prayer is being offered to the Supreme Being, the unmoved mover. But it is only in Christianity that prayer is offered through the right channel; the name of Jesus, name above every other name.

Jesus teaching his disciples at the sermon on the mountain addressed series of life events about who they are and how they are to live their lives, one of which is having a personal prayer life. It seems much easier praying with others; congregational prayer as it is called, but it takes lots of discipline and commitment to pray alone.

God almighty is omnipresent and He is not confined to a particular location. However, in his wisdom He opened our eyes to the blessedness of personal prayers. Jesus in our opening text establishes certain principles. First, you need no one to compel you to pray, “Go away by yourself.” Secondly, enjoy the alone time with God and shut the door behind you. This informs us of doing away with every form of distraction. The doors you may need to shut behind you might be putting your phones away from you or putting it in flight mode when its prayer time to avoid being distracted.

Do not allow the hustle and bustle in search for a living take away the pleasurable and rewarding moment of prayer from you. Aside praying on the go, find out the best time of the day when you can have alone time with your maker; it doesn’t have to be in the morning as our schedules and situations differs, but whatever the case, include quality time of prayer in your daily schedule.
