The 1st Law
Devotional Reading: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3
Over time the message of God’s grace is being revealed and embraced by believers. As good and awesome this is, it’s discovered that some messages are lacking on our pulpits. Note, this isn’t to bring about legalism as we are done with that by the death, burial and resurrection of Christ (He already fulfilled the law). However, there are eternal principles engrafted even in the laws that we can’t but learn from.
Taking into consideration our opening text, it’s a non negotiable thing that this law was given to the children of Israel and by extension every believer. Each and every believer now understands that it’s an aberration to have other gods beside the almighty. But, the devil cunning in his ways knows we can no longer bow to any physical image, and so in his craftiness, has replaced the love of God in man’s heart with lots of irrelevances and even most times with legitimate concerns of life. The very moment our love and devotion for God is being competed with, our loyalty is being divided. It is important therefore, that we take a pause and check that which is already becoming a god unto us which may lead to greater consequences we never bargain for.
Talking about love of money for example, see how apostle Paul puts it, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” 1Tim 6:10.
Hence, let’s check our life, what godly principle are we compromising, all because we need to make an ends meet? How many times have you neglected church meetings just to put food on the table? Why not reconsider your ways today and let go of other gods affecting your loyalty and trust in the one true God.

Nothing whatsoever takes the place of God in my life, whatever God in His love and grace couldn’t give me, may I never thirst after it. Restore unto me the passion and zeal for your name in Jesus name. Amen.
