Do Not Let Sinking Stop You

Key Text: “And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him.” — Matthew 14:31

One comforting truth about Peter’s story is this: he actually sank a little. Most people focus only on the walking part, but the sinking part matters too. Why? Because it reminds us that moments of weakness do not cancel God’s call on our lives. Peter was the only disciple who left the boat. Yes, he struggled, but he also experienced what the others never did. Sometimes believers become so afraid of failing that they never attempt anything meaningful. But in God’s kingdom, a failed attempt in faith is often better than a lifetime of safe unbelief. At least Peter can say, “I stepped out.” The others only watched from the boat like spectators.

Many people think one mistake means the end. They fail once and conclude, “Maybe God is not with me.” But Scripture shows us people who stumbled and still became mighty. Abraham lied at one point. Elijah became discouraged. Jonah ran away. Peter himself denied Jesus later on. Yet God restored and still used them. Your temporary sinking is not your final destination. God is not looking for flawless people. He is looking for hearts that keep turning back to Him. The enemy wants you to magnify your mistakes until you forget God’s mercy. But grace is stronger than failure.

Your own kind of sinking may look like a business attempt that did not work, praying for something that delayed, struggling with consistency, or stepping out in faith and facing criticism. Sometimes you may feel embarrassed because things did not go perfectly. But remember this: Jesus did not lecture Peter while he was sinking. He rescued him. God knows how to correct you without humiliating you. Also notice that Peter sank toward Jesus, not away from Him. That is important. When you fail, run toward God, not from Him. A believer who keeps reaching for Jesus can never truly drown.

Prayers and Confession
Lord, thank You because Your grace is greater than my mistakes. When I feel weak, help me to keep reaching for You. I refuse to allow fear of failure to stop me from obeying God. I declare that I will rise again after every setback. God’s hand is holding me and I will not drown in discouragement. Amen.
