Start Even Though You Are Afraid

Key Text: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

Starting something new can feel terrifying. A new assignment, ministry, business, responsibility, leadership role, project, or opportunity can suddenly make you question everything about yourself. Even people who looked confident in Scripture had moments of fear. Joshua was about to lead an entire nation after Moses. Imagine the pressure. That is like being asked to replace the greatest team captain ever while everybody is watching your first move. God knew Joshua was afraid, which is why He kept repeating, “Be strong and courageous.” Courage is not proof that fear disappeared. Courage is choosing to move while fear is still sitting beside you sweating nervously.

Many people miss great opportunities because they overestimate their weakness and underestimate God’s presence. When God gives you an assignment, your first reaction may be, “Lord, are You sure?” Moses felt that way. Gideon felt that way. Jeremiah felt that way. Sometimes God intentionally calls people into things bigger than their comfort zone so they will depend on Him and not just their abilities. If you already had everything needed in your own strength, you would not need faith. New beginnings often feel uncomfortable because you are entering unfamiliar territory. But remember, God does not only call people. He walks with them.

One funny thing about fear is that it loves dramatic speeches. It will tell you that if you fail once, your entire destiny will collapse. Fear exaggerates everything. But faith reminds you that beginners are allowed to grow. Nobody starts perfectly. Even Peter probably did not step out of the boat looking elegant and majestic. He simply obeyed Jesus. In the same way, you may feel shaky while starting that assignment, but obedience matters more than perfection. God is not asking you to know everything before you begin. He is asking you to trust Him enough to take the first step.

Prayers and Confession
Father, I receive courage to begin what You have placed in my heart. I refuse to let fear stop me from stepping into new opportunities and assignments. I declare that God is with me, strengthening me and guiding me. I may feel afraid, but I will still obey and move forward in faith. The grace of God is sufficient for me. Amen.
