Doing Good

Galatians 6:10 KJV

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

The Old Testament taught on act of goodness. In Israel they were commanded, “And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God” (Lev. 18:9-10). Solomon wrote, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again” (Prov. 19:17). That’s impressive. When you help someone you are lending to the Lord. David addressed this in the Psalms when he penned, “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble” (Ps. 41:1). So there is no doubt about our responsibility to help those in need.

The context of our anchor text is ensuring that we release our resources and find as much as any opportunities to share act of goodness to everyone. Our goal is to be like Jesus, it was written of “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power and he went about doing good (Acts 10:38)…” It is also observed that one of the nature of the Holy Spirit given to us is goodness (Galatians 5:22). Hence, goodness is something we must learn to integrate into our daily lives.

However, In our efforts to do good, we must not overlook the priority Paul sets. We are to do good to everyone, but we are to pay special attention to the family of Christ which he called the “the household of faith”. How we treat our fellow believers is a sign of our faith: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). That love for the family of God shows itself in acts of goodness and charity and is, in fact, one proof of salvation (1 John 2:9). We start doing good unto all men by softening our hearts toward our brothers and sisters in Christ and dedicating ourselves to their well-being, as though it were our own.
