Believing: God’s Work
John 6:29 NLT
“Jesus told them, This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.
The Old Testament folks couldn’t be made right before God until and unless they perform certain responsibilities based on works (fulfilling their part of the covenant). That is, the quality of their lives was based on the level of their obedience to numerous commandments of God. It isn’t gainsaying that no one could be made right by the law before God, otherwise Christ wouldn’t have come. Our anchor scripture was Jesus’ reply to the crowd who requested of him so they could perform the works of God. As much as this was a sincere request, Jesus assuredly said that the only work God wants from them is to believe in him being the messenger from God.
So also in our days, many still seek to please God by performing some religious rites and ended up being legalists as it were, yet without the joy of being pleasing to God. Believing in the gospel; death, burial and resurrection of Christ is the required work that gives meaning to every other works that follows as the product of the former. Can we make this check today, “do I truly believe Christ”?
