The Grave Was not The End
Devotional Reading: “The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.” Romans 6:10 (NIV)
When we talk about Christ’s burial, we often think of it as the quiet moment between His death and resurrection. But there’s more to it. The burial of Jesus wasn’t just a formality—it was a significant step in God’s redemptive plan. His body being laid in the tomb wasn’t the end of His story; it marked the beginning of a powerful spiritual reality for all who believe.
If Jesus had only died and not been buried, there would be a gap in the fulfillment of Scripture and the full picture of our identification with Him. Burial confirms death. It seals it. Jesus being buried confirmed that He truly died to sin once and for all (Romans 6:10). For us as believers, it means that our old self—our sinful nature—was not only crucified with Him but was buried as well.
This is powerful because it shows us that the old life isn’t just hanging around waiting to resurface. It has been laid to rest. We are not supposed to revisit it like a memory. Christ’s burial teaches us that there is a finality to the power sin once had over us. Just as He was placed in the tomb, never to return to the cross, so our old self was buried and should remain dead.
When we grasp this, we begin to live with new confidence. We don’t have to be bound by the habits, guilt, or struggles of our past. They’ve been buried. We don’t have to dig them back up. The burial of Christ assures us that we can leave those things behind and walk forward.
Today, reflect on what you’ve been trying to resurrect that Christ already buried. Is it guilt? Shame? An old mindset? The tomb was sealed for a reason—your past has no right to live again.
Prayer and Confession
Father, thank You that Christ’s burial was not the end, but the doorway into a new beginning for me. I declare that my old life is buried with Christ. I am no longer defined by my past, my mistakes, or my guilt. I walk in the freedom of Your grace, knowing that what was buried cannot rise again. I leave the grave behind and embrace the new life You have given me in Jesus’ name. Amen.
