You Are the Light

Devotional Reading: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden…” Matthew 5:14 NKJV

It’s easy to feel invisible sometimes—like your life is a background character in a movie. But Jesus steps in with a surprising identity boost: “You are the light of the world.” Not a flashlight. Not a candle. You’re the light of the world! That’s a powerful identity! He didn’t say you should be or could be; He said you are. So, first lesson: God sees light in you even when you see confusion.

Being “the light” doesn’t mean being flashy or perfect. It means carrying a divine spark, something of God’s character that makes you stand out. Light brings clarity, hope, and direction. Just imagine being in a dark room trying to find your charger, then someone switches on the light. Ah! Relief! That’s what you bring into the world.

Now, here’s the funny part: many believers are more like night bulbs—dim, flickering, scared of being seen. We hide behind excuses: “I’m shy,” “I don’t want to be too spiritual,” or “What will people say?” But Jesus said a city on a hill can’t be hidden. In other words, stop trying to blend in when you were built to stand out!

Light is only useful in darkness. So when things get dark around you—at your workplace, family, or in society—that’s your cue, not your cue to run. Darkness is not your enemy; it’s your assignment. Be like Jesus: enter dark places and light them up.

I am the light of the world. I shine with the love, truth, and joy of Jesus, wherever I go. Amen!
