Obedience in Small Things

Devotional Reading: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” – Luke 16:10

When people think about obedience to God’s Word, they often imagine big dramatic moments – like standing before kings to declare prophecy or giving away their life savings. But in reality, transformation usually begins with obeying in the small, ordinary things. God does not first test you with carrying a mountain; He starts with “pick up that stone.” If you ignore the stone, why should He trust you with the mountain?

God’s Word says “do all things without complaining.” That includes washing plates, waiting on a queue, or even dealing with that colleague who acts like your boss though he is not. Obeying in those small moments might not earn you applause, but heaven takes note. If the Word cannot shape your response in little things, it won’t suddenly take over when bigger tests come.

Jesus modeled this principle. He obeyed God in simple things: praying often, serving others, and even paying taxes with a coin from a fish. These simple acts prepared Him for the ultimate obedience on the cross. Likewise, when you obey in daily life; controlling your tongue, giving thanks, walking in love,… you are training your heart for greater obedience tomorrow.

So stop waiting for the “big test” to show your faithfulness. Start with the small instructions the Word gives you today. It might be as little as apologizing, forgiving, giving a word of encouragement, or choosing honesty in a minor deal. Every small “yes” to God shapes your character and makes you ready for bigger assignments.

Prayer and Confession
Lord, help me to see the value in obeying Your Word in the small things. I confess that I am faithful in little, and therefore You can trust me with much. My daily actions reflect obedience to Your instructions.
