Paul’s Instructions: Recognize and Honor Spiritual Leaders.
Devotional Reading: “Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work… — 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13 (NIV)
Have you ever noticed how people clap wildly for celebrities, footballers, and influencers, but barely say “thank you” to the person who stays up praying for their souls? The very first Instruction by Paul is addressing that very imbalance. He was saying, “Don’t overlook your pastors, teachers, and spiritual leaders.” They may not trend online or drive the fanciest cars, but their job description is heavier than most people imagine. They stand between heaven and your inconsistencies, constantly praying, teaching, correcting, and guiding. That’s not child’s play!
Some believers treat spiritual leaders like customer-care agents: they only call when something is wrong. But Paul says, “Acknowledge them.” To acknowledge means to recognize, appreciate, and honor. When you value those who labor over your soul, you’re not worshipping them, you’re honoring the grace of God upon their lives. Even Jesus appreciated John the Baptist’s ministry before His own took off (Matthew 11:11). Ignoring those who feed you spiritually is like eating good food every day and pretending the chef doesn’t exist.
Paul connects honoring leaders with living in peace. Why? Because dishonor breeds division. When people in the church stop respecting spiritual authority, confusion follows. God’s order is simple: where there is honor, there will be peace. When you appreciate your pastor, your fellowship leader, you strengthen the fabric of love that holds the church together.
Honestly, leadership isn’t easy. Your pastor has the same bills, temptations, and daily battles you have, yet they still show up every Sunday or every other day with a smile, ready to pour into others. Paul’s call to honor them isn’t flattery; it’s gratitude. Next time your leader corrects you or checks up on your walk with God, don’t roll your eyes thank God for someone who still cares enough to challenge you.
Prayer and Confession
Father, thank You for the spiritual leaders You’ve placed in my life. I choose to honor, support, and appreciate them. I will not take their labor for granted. I am wise enough to recognize grace when I see it. I walk in love, peace, and gratitude today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
