How To Discern God’s Leadings
Devotional Reading: “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” – Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)
Many believers struggle with knowing whether it’s God or their mind. The truth is, discerning divine leading is not meant to be complicated or mystical; it’s something every believer can learn through relationship and practice. The more you fellowship with God through His Word and prayer, the easier it becomes to recognize His tone, His peace, and His rhythm. God doesn’t shout to compete with noise; He whispers to those who take time to listen.
To discern God’s leadings, you must train your spiritual senses. God’s leading will never contradict His Word, so that’s your first filter. Any voice or thought that goes against Scripture is automatically disqualified. Secondly, God’s guidance comes with peace, not panic. If your heart feels like a market square, you might need to pause.
When God leads, there’s a calm assurance even when the path doesn’t make sense. Thirdly, God confirms His leadings through patterns; consistent nudges, scriptures that align, or wise counsel that echoes what He’s already showing you. Sometimes, it’s that quiet “knowing” in your spirit that just refuses to fade away.
A practical way to grow in discernment is to start small. Practice obeying the gentle impressions; like calling someone suddenly on your mind, or pausing to pray for someone who flashes across your thoughts. You’ll be amazed how often those impressions align with divine timing. Discernment grows with obedience; every time you respond correctly, your spiritual ear sharpens.
Over time, you’ll learn to separate God’s whisper from your emotions or fears. The goal isn’t to become a “professional discerner” with spooky accuracy; it’s to grow so familiar with God that His leadings feel natural and unmistakable.
