When Serving Turns Into Subtle Comparison
Devotional Reading: “…Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?”

One of the sneaky traps Martha fell into was comparison. She looked at Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet and immediately concluded, “I am working, she is relaxing.” This is how comparison starts. It grows quietly in the heart while we are busy doing “good things.”
And the truth is, many of us compare ourselves with others more often than we admit. Someone else seems to be growing spiritually faster. Someone is praying louder. Someone is posting more scriptures online. Someone is getting more opportunities in church. Before we know it, our service to God becomes mixed with silent competition.
Day to day life exposes this same pattern. Think about siblings in a home. One is washing plates, sweeping and running up and down while the other is watching television peacefully. Even if you love that sibling, something inside you will rise. Or imagine being in the office, carrying out all the team projects while another colleague is scrolling through their phone. At some point you will feel like announcing, “Excuse me, in case nobody is seeing me, I am working oh.” Martha felt that way. She wanted Jesus to notice her effort and also to notice Mary’s “lack of effort.”
You see, comparison distracts us from Christ and ties our spiritual progress to human measurement. Jesus never asked Martha to compare her service with Mary’s devotion. He simply wanted her to make the right choice for her own soul.
God measures us individually, not competitively. Once comparison enters your heart, joy leaks out. Once joy leaks out, service becomes heavy. Once service becomes heavy, frustration becomes your worship style. Jesus was inviting Martha into a better posture, not into a competition.
Prayers and Confession
Lord, free my heart from comparison. Teach me to serve You without looking sideways at others. I choose joy, humility and contentment in my walk with You. I confess that I am led by Your Spirit, not by competition, and my identity is secure in You. Amen!
