The Wisdom of Answering Questions

Not every question deserves an immediate answer, and not every answer should be given in the same way. Wisdom is knowing what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. Some questions are honest and open, while others are loaded, emotional, or even meant to provoke. If you respond the same way to all of them, you may end up creating confusion instead of clarity.
Jesus demonstrated this beautifully. When Pilate questioned Him, He sometimes answered directly and sometimes remained silent. That was not confusion; it was wisdom. Silence can sometimes speak louder than words, especially when people are not genuinely seeking truth. On the other hand, when people were sincerely searching, Jesus gave clear, thoughtful responses. Wisdom helps you know the difference. Wisdom is not just knowing the right answer. It is knowing the right time and the right way to give it. A well timed word can open a heart more than a long speech.
In practical terms, before answering a question about your faith, pause internally for a moment. Ask yourself, “Is this person truly seeking understanding or just trying to argue?” Also consider, “What part of their question needs clarity first?” Sometimes people ask big questions with small understanding. For example, someone may ask, “If God is real, why is there suffering?” but they may actually need help understanding free will, human responsibility, and the brokenness of the world. A wise response does not rush. It builds step by step, like laying bricks, not throwing stones. The goal is not to sound clever but to communicate truth clearly and gently.
Prayer and Confession
Father, give me wisdom in every conversation. Teach me when to speak, how to speak, and when to be silent. Help me to respond with grace and understanding rather than haste or pride. Let my words carry light, peace, and truth to those who hear me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
