You Don’t Need to Have an Opinion on Everything

Key Text: “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.” — Proverbs 17:28

Modern culture rewards instant opinions. Everyone is expected to comment, react, analyze, and choose a side immediately. Yet biblical wisdom often moves much slower. Proverbs teaches that there is wisdom in restraint. Not every matter requires your expertise, your commentary, or your judgment. Sometimes the wisest sentence in a conversation is, “I do not know enough about that to speak on it.”

Job’s friends made a costly mistake. They had an explanation for everything. Before they understood the situation, they had already reached conclusions. By the end of the story, God corrected them. Wisdom understands that knowledge has limits. The older Solomon became, the more aware he was of how much remained unknown. Foolishness rushes to conclusions. Wisdom is comfortable with unanswered questions and incomplete information.

Imagine a doctor who prescribed medication before hearing the symptoms. We would call that irresponsible. Yet people do it every day with opinions. They judge situations they have not investigated, criticize people they do not understand, and spread conclusions based on fragments of information. Wisdom leaves room for context. It asks questions before making statements and listens before making judgments. Sometimes silence is not ignorance. Sometimes it is maturity.

Prayer and Confession
Father, help me to walk in humility and wisdom. Teach me to listen carefully, learn patiently, and speak thoughtfully. Deliver me from the pressure to have an opinion on everything. Let my words be few, wise, and full of grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
