Feelings Are Wonderful Servants but Terrible Masters
Key Text: “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.” Proverbs 28:26 (NKJV)
When it comes to decision-making, there is nothing wrong with having emotions. God created them. Jesus wept, rejoiced, felt compassion, and even became angry at the right things. The problem begins when emotions become the driver while wisdom is locked inside the boot of the car. Feelings make wonderful passengers, but they should never hold the steering wheel. Many people have bought things they did not need, resigned from good jobs, ended healthy relationships, or spoken terrible words simply because they “felt like it” at the moment. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable.
Think about Esau. One day he came home hungry, saw a pot of stew, and suddenly his stomach became a better adviser than God’s promise. He traded his birthright for one meal because his present feeling looked bigger than his future inheritance. Later he regretted it, but the decision had already left the station. We laugh at Esau until we remember the last time we replied to a message while angry or ordered food because “I deserve this” after seeing our account balance waving a white flag. Temporary emotions often demand permanent decisions, and that is a dangerous bargain.
Faith teaches us to respond to truth instead of reacting to feelings. Every emotion should pass through the filter of God’s Word before becoming an action. Ask yourself, “Will I still make this decision after praying, sleeping over it, and checking Scripture?” If the answer changes after peace returns, then your emotion was trying to scam you. Wisdom waits, but emotions rush. The Holy Spirit leads with peace, not pressure.
Prayers and Confession
Father, thank You for giving me emotions, but help me never to become their servant. Teach me to submit every feeling to the authority of Your Word. I receive wisdom to pause before I speak, patience before I act, and discernment before I decide. My life is led by the Holy Spirit and not by unstable emotions. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflection
Which recent decision did you make mostly because of how you felt? If you had waited, prayed, and sought God’s wisdom first, would you have made the same choice?
