Never Make Permanent Decisions in Temporary Emotions
Key Text: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (NKJV)
One of the greatest mistakes people make is allowing a temporary emotion to produce a permanent decision. A bad day at work suddenly becomes, “I quit!” A misunderstanding in marriage becomes, “Maybe we should just separate.” One disappointing church experience becomes, “I am never going back again.” It is amazing how our emotions can convince us that today’s frustration is tomorrow’s destiny. Thankfully, feelings expire, but some decisions refuse to do so.
Elijah experienced this after his greatest victory on Mount Carmel. The same prophet who boldly challenged hundreds of false prophets suddenly became afraid because of one threatening message from Jezebel. He ran into the wilderness, sat under a tree, and asked God to take his life. Imagine that. A man who had just witnessed fire fall from heaven now believed his life was over because of one emotional moment. God did not answer Elijah’s emotional request. Instead, He gave him food, rest, and fresh direction. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is eat, sleep, pray, and avoid making announcements while your emotions are shouting louder than your faith.
The enemy loves emotional storms because cloudy emotions often reduce clear judgment. That is why Scripture repeatedly encourages patience, self control, and waiting on the Lord. If you are deeply angry, hurt, excited, or afraid, press the pause button before making life changing decisions. The Holy Spirit is never in a hurry. If the decision is truly from God today, it will still be from God after you have prayed and gained peace. Never let a passing emotion write the story of your future.
Prayers and Confession
Father, I refuse to become a victim of emotional decisions. Help me to wait for Your wisdom before I speak or act. Fill my heart with Your peace that guards my mind and directs my steps. I declare that I am led by the Holy Spirit, not by fear, anger, excitement, or disappointment. My decisions are rooted in truth, and my future is secure in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
