THINK FROM YOUR NEW IDENTITY

Key Text: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV

There is a Yoruba adage that says, “Igi gogoro má leè dágbére fún igi kékeré,” meaning that one tree cannot simply become another by wishing it were different. Yet, when it comes to our identity in Christ, the gospel announces something remarkable: God does not merely improve the old creation; He brings us into a new life in Christ. The challenge is that while our identity has changed, our minds may still be carrying old labels, old fears and old conclusions. A person can receive a new life in Christ and still think like someone who has no hope, no value or no future.

Imagine someone who has been told all their life that they are not intelligent enough to succeed. Even after receiving Christ, they may continue avoiding opportunities, doubting their abilities and withdrawing whenever challenges arise. The problem is no longer simply what people said to them; it is that those words have become the lens through which they interpret themselves. This is why renewing your mind is essential. You must learn to replace the vocabulary of your past with the truth of God’s Word. You are not defined by your worst mistake, your family background or somebody’s opinion of you. In Christ, you have received a new identity, and your thinking must grow to reflect that reality.

Here is the beautiful part; you do not have to struggle to earn an identity that Christ has already given you. You learn to live from it. When you understand that you are accepted in Christ, correction no longer has to destroy your confidence. When you understand that you are loved by God, another person’s success does not have to threaten your sense of worth. When you understand that you have been created for good works (Ephesians 2:10), you begin to approach your gifts, opportunities and responsibilities differently. You are not trying to become a new creation by thinking differently; you are learning to think differently because you are already a new creation in Christ.

Prayers and Confession
Father, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. Open my understanding to the reality of my identity in You, and help me recognize every thought that contradicts what You have accomplished for me. I declare that my thinking is being renewed by the truth of God’s Word. I will not strive to become what Christ has already made me; I will grow in understanding and learn to express His life in my everyday decisions.

Reflection
Which area of your life are you still approaching from the identity of your past rather than the truth of who you are in Christ?
