Does Your Word Build ?

Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say.

As followers of Christ, our words have immense power. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us to use our words to build others up, not tear them down. We’re called to stop “dirty talk” another version says corrupt talk – gossip, slander, and hurtful speech – and instead speak life-giving words. Think of the last conversation you had. Did your words uplift or discourage? Our words can either heal or harm, and it’s crucial to recognize their impact.

The Bible emphasizes the power of our words, saying, “The tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21). Consider the impact of your words on others. Do you speak words of encouragement or criticism? When someone shares their struggles, do you offer hope or judgment? A simple phrase, “I’m praying for you,” or “You’re doing great,” can bring immense comfort and strength.

To speak life-giving words, we need to be mindful of our conversations. Before speaking, ask yourself, “Will these words help or hurt?” Replace gossip with prayer, and offer constructive feedback instead of criticism. Listen actively and respond with empathy. Share words of affirmation and appreciation, acknowledging the good in others. By doing so, we create an environment of love, support, and growth.

A transformed mindset is essential to speaking life-giving words. We must renew our thoughts and attitudes, aligning them with God’s Word. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things above.” As we focus on God’s perspective, our words will reflect His love and wisdom. This transformation requires intentional effort, but the reward is eternal.

Today, commit to using your words to build others up.
