OVERFLOW BEGINS WITH OBEDIENCE
Key Text: “And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.” — Luke 5:6 KJV
There are moments when God wants to bring increase into our lives, but the increase is connected to an instruction. In Luke 5, Peter had already worked all night and caught nothing, yet Jesus told him to launch into the deep and let down his net. Peter could have responded, “Jesus, thank You, but I have already tried this fishing business; the fish and I have reached an agreement.” Instead, he obeyed, and his obedience positioned him for an extraordinary catch. Sometimes the miracle is waiting on the other side of an instruction you have been tempted to dismiss.
Notice something interesting: Peter had the boat, the net, the skill, and the experience, but none of these produced the overflow until he acted on Jesus’ word. This teaches us that capacity without obedience can remain unproductive. You may have talent, education, connections, ideas, and opportunities, but there are seasons when God will ask you to do something that does not immediately make sense. The instruction may look ordinary, inconvenient, or even unnecessary, but obedience often becomes the bridge between what God has spoken and what you eventually experience.
There is a practical lesson here: do not allow yesterday’s failure to become today’s excuse for disobedience. Peter’s previous experience said, “We caught nothing,” but Jesus’ word said, “Let down your net.” Your last attempt may have failed, the business may have struggled, the application may have been rejected, the relationship may not have worked, or the opportunity may have disappeared, but failure is not always God’s final word. When God gives a fresh instruction, do not answer Him with an old disappointment. The fact that it did not work yesterday does not mean it cannot work today when God gives the instruction.
Prayers and Confession
Father, give me grace to recognise Your instructions and the courage to obey You, even when what You ask seems contrary to my experience. My heart is sensitive to the voice of the Lord, and I receive wisdom to know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. As I obey Your Word, may my life produce results that exceed my natural expectations. Amen.
