Called to Shine

Devotional Reading: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14

Many believers think shining as light simply means avoiding sin or wearing a suit to church every Sunday, but Jesus meant something bigger. Light is only useful where there is darkness. When Jesus said we are the light of the world, He was saying that our presence should make darkness uncomfortable. If people still enjoy gossip, corruption, or double standards around us without feeling a sting of conviction, maybe our bulb is not switched on yet. Light reveals, guides, and sometimes exposes what people would rather keep hidden. That is not always comfortable, but it is powerful.

Think about electricity. In Nigeria, when NEPA (or PHCN if you want to be formal) brings light, the whole street rejoices. Children and adults included shouts “Up NEPA!” as if heaven just answered prayers. Why? Because darkness has been interrupted. That is the same way a believer’s presence should cause joy, direction, and even relief. Your wisdom in the office, your peace in the midst of family quarrels, or your creative ideas in solving problems should make people say, “Thank God this person is here.” That is shining.

Shining is not just about miracles on the crusade ground. It is also when you provide solutions where others only complain. Joseph shined in Egypt not just because he interpreted dreams, but because he solved a national food crisis. Daniel shined in Babylon by giving wise counsel when everyone else was confused. You too can shine in your field; whether you are a teacher, student, mechanic, tailor, or even an okada rider. God is not waiting for you to own a pulpit before He uses you; your workplace is your pulpit.

So, the first step to shining is to stop hiding. Stop covering your faith like a lantern under a bucket. Speak with grace, act with integrity, and bring solutions with boldness. When you step into situations with God’s wisdom and kindness, your life itself becomes a sermon that preaches louder than words. Remember: a candle does not struggle to shine, it just burns. Let God burn through you.

Prayer and Confession
Lord, thank You for calling me to shine in a dark world. I refuse to dim my light through fear, compromise, or laziness. From today, my life will radiate wisdom, kindness, solutions, and the power of God. I declare that I am a light-bringer, a hope-giver, and a solution-provider in Jesus’ name. Amen.
