Focus on Jesus, Not the Storm

Key Text: “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” — Matthew 14:30

Peter was already doing the impossible. Let’s allow that sink in for a moment. A human being was walking on water. Yet the Bible says he began to sink when he shifted his attention from Jesus to the wind. This means you can be in the middle of a miracle and still get distracted by surrounding problems. Sometimes the greatest enemy of faith is not the devil. It is misplaced focus. Peter was fine while looking at Jesus, but the moment he started studying the storm like a weather reporter, fear entered. Many believers do the same thing. We start with faith, then suddenly become experts in worrying.

Life has a way of making the storm loud. Bills begin to speak in tongues. Deadlines start chasing you. Family pressure appears from nowhere. Social media will even make it look like everybody else has figured life out except you. Before you know it, your eyes leave Jesus and land fully on the waves. But notice something important. The storm did not stop before Peter walked. The wind was still there. Faith is not pretending challenges do not exist. Faith is deciding that God’s Word is more powerful than what is happening around you. Eagles fly above storms, but chickens panic in the rain. God did not create you to live spiritually like a frightened chicken.

Another beautiful truth is this. Even when Peter began sinking, Jesus did not abandon him. Peter cried, “Lord, save me!” and immediately Jesus stretched out His hand. God is not shocked by your weak moments. He knows you are human. Sometimes faith will shake a little. Sometimes your courage will wobble like bad table legs. But if your heart still reaches for Jesus, He will hold you up. The goal is not to act perfect. The goal is to keep turning back to Him. A believer who keeps looking to Jesus will rise again even after moments of fear.

Prayers and Confession
Lord, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You and not on the storms around me. I refuse to magnify fear above Your promises. When challenges arise, I will trust Your power and Your presence. Even in weak moments, I know Your hand is holding me. I declare that my faith will not fail. Amen.
