Be Wise: Mind Your Own Business
Key Text: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:11
One of the strangest habits of human nature is our ability to become experts on everybody else’s life while neglecting our own. The writer of Ecclesiastes observed that much frustration comes from constantly comparing ourselves with others. Peter once asked Jesus about the future of John, and Jesus essentially replied, “What is that to you? Follow Me.” That response contains a lifetime of wisdom. Many people lose focus on their assignment because they are too busy monitoring someone else’s.
Comparison is exhausting because it is a race with no finish line. There will always be someone richer, smarter, faster, prettier, more gifted, or more successful. Wisdom understands that God grades us according to faithfulness, not competition. While David was learning to play the harp and fight lions, he was not worried about what Samuel’s other candidates were doing. He focused on the field God gave him, and in time, God brought him to the throne.
Imagine a runner in a race who spends the entire time looking sideways at other competitors. Before long, they will stumble over something directly in front of them. Many people trip over their own opportunities because they are distracted by another person’s journey. Wisdom says, “Celebrate others, learn from others, pray for others, but stay focused on what God has called you to do.” Your lane may not be crowded because it was designed specifically for you.
Prayer and Confession
Father, help me to remain focused on the assignment You have given me. Deliver me from comparison, distraction, and unnecessary competition. Teach me to rejoice in the success of others while faithfully pursuing Your purpose for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
