David’s Testimony
1 Samuel 17:45
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
When we mention faith, we can’t rule out the confession of God’s word. Now let’s look at how David did his.
We all know this story so well in 1Samuel 17, in fact many of us can narrate it, however, many of us still believe David killed Goliath with a sling and a stone (this were shadows of the real acts). However in the real sense of it, it was David’s trust, believe and Testimony that killed goliath.
David’s courage was stirred up by the testimony he had about the bear and lion he had killed, they were threat to his sheepfold – he banked on this testimony when he faced Israel’s archenemy (the philistine giant) in 17:34-38 – Saul set to bring discouragement but discouragement is always conquered with the testimony of God’s goodness. David believed in the God who had delivered him from the paws of the bear and Lion. In verses 17:39-44 – the enemy threatens David, and reduced him to nothing, and boasted in his own strength and stature. This is the same way the devil threatens your faith in Christ, he tells you that you are not fit. He tells you how you have not been consistent in your prayer and Bible Study life. He dents your identity in Christ and always wants to make you afraid of him…. David only had a sling and stones, the enemy only saw that, he didn’t see the power of God and the confidence David had built around his testimony.
Prayers and Bible study are good, but are only effective to the degree of how truly you believe in God’s word and confess it with your mouth… Believers are not to keep silent against the enemy. Yes you don’t have a stable fellowship with God, which is not good (one should), but you have the grace and mercy of God that triumphs … You have an identity with God which is not defined by your works (what you do or don’t do) but by the sacrifice of Christ. David knew his God. His testimony and confession was not that he came with a sling and a stone but confessed that he came in the name of LORD God of the armies of Israel. “but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts,…”
Therefore we are assured in whom we have believed we can exercise our authorities as believers by speaking.
