A Worthy Cause 1
Matthew 26:39 NIV
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
The word “suffering” sounds a little bit awkward to some folks, in fact some don’t want to hear that word. Suffering is inevitable in this life. Settle it in your heart and probably prepare for it ahead of time. This of course does not mean God originated suffering. No, not at all. Suffering is a part of the aftermath of the fall of man which will continue to be till this Earth expires.
Even though, suffering was never the will of God for man, but because of the fallen state of man, suffering becomes a tool in the hand of God for a man that will fulfill purpose. The Bible recorded how Jesus suffered just for our sake; inorder for us to have life. He suffered the pain of guilt and shame just for you. See 1 Peters 3:18 and 4:1 and Heb. 13:12.
To tell you the severity of the pains, Jesus Christ our Lord and savior in Gethsemane almost gave up on humanity. He actually prayed the father saying ” My father, if there is any way you can deliver me from this suffering, please take it from me.” Matt. 26:39TPT
But you see, Jesus knew on the inside that this particular cause (suffering) is a worthy one. He knew that you and I wouldn’t have been able to receive an eternal forgiveness of our sins if he will not endure this suffering to the end. If he had quitted half way, we wouldn’t have been able to receive the gift of righteousness and justification; there wouldn’t have been anything called new creation or new creation realties.
Ultimately, Jesus knew that what count most is doing the will of the father and that requires that he(Jesus) must suffer before that will be accomplished. He changed his prayer saying “Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfill your plan for me.” He thus went ahead and endured the suffering to the end for He knew that it is a worthy cause. He deserves all praise and adoration. Glory Hallelujah.
