Relationship Above Possession

Devotional Reading: “And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. – Luke 15:12-13 KJV

The story in Luke 15 is popularly tagged “The Prodigal Son.” However, reading the entire passage objectively, one will discover the parable is more of the loving father than the prodigality of the son. The undoing of the younger son started with the desire to acquire possession and thus, he valued it over being with and staying with the Father.

One of the major sign of this latter day is the love for possession, and this has given rise to materialistic gospel where everyone desires to be wealthy at all cost even in the body of Christ. Just like the younger son, many believer’s desires possession and spiritual gifts over relationship with God. Whereas, Christ called us like he did the twelve, to be with him before sending us out for the kingdom purpose.

A simple and sincere question you need to ask yourself is, “why do I desire that which I have been asking for (either in the physical or in the spiritual)?” The answer to that will reveal whether you desire possession over a relationship with the Lord. Yours might not be pursuit of possession, but what is it that is gradually taking you away from the Father? Watch and make amendment where necessary.
