Commitment to the Lord

Devotional Reading: “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.” – Psalms 137:4-6 KJV

Believers who are not well taught in the era of Grace are quick to write-off the Old Testament portion of the scriptures, especially the Law and the prophets.

Of a truth, Christ had fulfilled all the requirements of the law and granted unto us access into his presence not by works but by grace. However, it is important to know that many practices (if not all) might have be exchanged for a better one, explained and even abolished, but the principles behind them remains.

From the text read, the house of Judah; inhabitants of Jerusalem had just been taken to captivity and their captors required of them a song. They refused and not only that, they bound themselves with a curse (something you may consider extreme).

The emphasis to you as a believer is, even with the abundance of God’s grace given to you, are you committed to pleasing the Lord? Are you not taking his gifts and sacred things with levity? As a choir member, you see nothing wrong in you playing or singing in a club house, those who blaspheme the name of your God, inasmuch as your needs are being met?

So before you throw off your Old Testament and undermine its principles, ask yourself, to what degree are you committed to the Lord as they were.
