Honour in a Complicated World

Devotional Reading: “Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.” – 1 Peter 2:17 MSG

Respecting authority in a world filled with complicated leadership decisions can be difficult. Yet, the Bible doesn’t ask us to respect perfect leaders; it asks us to respect leadership as a God-ordained institution. It’s about honouring the structure, even when we don’t agree with the individuals.

Respect doesn’t mean silence in the face of injustice. It means expressing concerns with grace, praying rather than just complaining, and contributing positively where we can. We are called to be salt and light, and both require presence—not withdrawal or rebellion.

Even Jesus, in the face of flawed Roman rule, responded with wisdom and honour. Paul also stood for truth while respecting those in authority. Their examples remind us that kingdom values can thrive even in tough systems.

When we respect authority, we position ourselves for influence. Our attitude can open doors our talents never could. God sees when we choose honour over cynicism and faithfulness over frustration.

Prayer and Confession
Father, help me to honour leadership even when it’s hard. Give me wisdom to speak truth with grace and to live as a responsible citizen of both heaven and earth. Amen!
